Chin Liposuction
Conveniently located to serve the areas of Pasadena, CA

Chin liposuction is a procedure designed to remove unwanted fat from underneath the chin, also known as submental fat. (1) A double chin can develop due to various factors such as genetics, age, or weight gain. This can be a source of self-consciousness for many individuals, as it tends to soften the jawline and create the appearance of excess weight—even in those who are otherwise fit and toned. Submental fat can be stubborn and is often resistant to diet and exercise, leading many individuals to explore targeted fat removal treatments such as chin liposuction.

About Chin Liposuction
Chin liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that uses a small suction tube (cannula) to gently remove stubborn deposits of fat from underneath the chin. Liposuction as a procedure has been around for decades, having been invented in the 1980s. (2) Since then, the procedure has undergone significant advancements and evolved into various techniques, with chin liposuction now commonly performed worldwide.
Benefits of Chin Liposuction
Chin liposuction offers many benefits, including:
- Enhanced Definition: One of the primary benefits of chin liposuction is the removal of excess fat from under the chin and jaw, leading to a more prominent and defined jawline and neck.
- Slimmer appearance: Removing submental fat can enhance facial contours, creating a slimmer look that often gives the impression of weight loss.
- Long-Lasting Results: Once the fat cells are removed, they cannot return, leading to a long-lasting improvement in contour.
- Improved Confidence: A more sculpted profile can enhance self-esteem and make patients feel more comfortable and confident—whether in everyday life, on video calls, or when taking photos.
Suitable Candidates
Liposuction procedures of all varieties tend to attract many candidates. The most suitable candidates for chin liposuction are typically individuals with stubborn deposits of fat underneath their chin or around their jawline. Patients who have recently undergone a substantial weight loss should be at a maintainable, stable weight and ideally have good skin elasticity.
All candidates interested in undergoing chin liposuction should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations regarding what this procedure can accomplish. Additionally, individuals should not have any underlying medical conditions that may inhibit their recovery. Dr. Min will determine each patient’s candidacy for this procedure during their personal consultation and can help provide suitable alternatives for patients who do not fulfill these qualifications.
Personal Consultation
Each patient will have a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Min to discuss their concerns and ideal aesthetic. For your convenience, both in-person and virtual consultations are available. During the visit, Dr. Min will thoroughly review your medical history and evaluate the chin, jawline, and neck. She will then create a customized treatment plan, recommending the most effective strategies to help you achieve your desired results.

Preparation
Preparation is an essential step in each patient’s treatment plan. Dr. Min will provide each patient with a set of personalized pre-operative instructions during their consultation to help them prepare for their procedure. Instructions may vary between individuals, but following each one will help promote a quick and easy recovery, as well as the best possible results.
Patients will need to discontinue using medications and supplements that contain blood-thinning properties. Nicotine use will need to be completely ceased until each patient has fully recovered, and alcohol should also be avoided. (2) Additionally, patients should schedule time off work and arrange transportation home.
Procedure
Before the procedure begins, patients are given an oral sedative, such as Valium, to help ease anxiety, along with a prescribed antibiotic. Dr. Min will outline the targeted areas with a marking pen, followed by thorough cleansing and sanitization of the skin. Local anesthesia is then administered to ensure the patient remains comfortable throughout the procedure.
Dr. Min will administer a tumescent solution that is designed to help minimize bleeding and bruising, numb the treatment area, and swell fat cells, making them easier to remove. The solution consists of epinephrine, saline, and a local anesthetic, typically lidocaine. (2)
After allowing some time for the fluid to take effect, Dr. Min will make small incisions under the chin and at the earlobes. She will insert a small cannula into the area and gently oscillate it back and forth to break up the fat before it is gently suctioned out. After she has achieved the desired contours, she will close the incisions carefully and then apply a dressing.
Recovery
Chin liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure, therefore, each patient will be released home to continue recovering after a monitoring period. While healing from this procedure, it is common for patients to experience mild swelling and bruising in the treated area. These effects are temporary and will gradually dissipate on their own. Pain is minimal and may be managed with over-the-counter pain medications and occasionally a prescription pain medication as directed by Dr. Min. Patients are advised to wear a neck compression garment to minimize swelling, support healing, and help the skin retract smoothly. Worn consistently for the first few days—and then as directed—it plays a key role in optimizing contour and achieving the best possible results. Lymphatic drainage massage is also recommended to help reduce swelling, accelerate the healing process, and improve results.
Most patients can typically return to their daily routines within one to two weeks, depending on the nature of their careers. However, each individual will need to continue avoiding physical activities or strenuous tasks for several more weeks or until approved by Dr. Min. Any further instructions will be provided during each patient’s personal consultation.
Results
The results of chin liposuction will be noticeable immediately after the procedure, but the full effects of the treatment will continue to develop as any remaining swelling subsides. You will be able to enjoy a slimmer, more sculpted neck, as well as a more defined chin and jawline. The results of chin liposuction are long-lasting, as the removed fat cells do not grow back, but healthy lifestyle habits should be continued to help maintain the results. Dr. Min has helped thousands of patients achieve their aesthetic goals and has performed many liposuction procedures with consistently exceptional results. Corresponding Procedures
Neck Lift
When is a neck lift needed? Some patients have a significant amount of loose skin or muscle laxity in the neck, making them less ideal candidates for chin liposuction alone. In these cases, a neck lift may be recommended to achieve more comprehensive rejuvenation. Unlike liposuction, which targets excess fat, a neck lift also addresses sagging skin and weakened neck muscles that contribute to visible banding or a “turkey neck” appearance. This procedure is especially beneficial for patients with more advanced signs of aging or significant skin laxity that liposuction alone cannot correct. By tightening the underlying muscles and removing excess skin, a neck lift creates smoother, firmer contours and a more youthful, defined neck and jawline.

FAQ
Does chin liposuction help get rid of a double chin?
Yes, chin liposuction is designed to reduce submental fat, effectively addressing concerns relating to a double chin.
Is chin liposuction safe to perform?
When performed by a qualified and board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Min, chin liposuction is a safe procedure with minimal risks.
How long will my recovery take after undergoing chin liposuction?
Each patient’s recovery timeline will vary, but most patients can return to work within one week.
How long will the results of my chin liposuction last?
The results of chin liposuction are essentially permanent, as once the fat cells are fully removed, they cannot grow back. However, any existing fat cells nearby can still grow, so patients should do their best to maintain a healthy lifestyle to preserve their results.
Can chin liposuction be combined with other procedures?
Yes, chin liposuction can be performed alongside other procedures for more comprehensive results. For more information about combining procedures, we recommend discussing this option during your consultation with Dr. Min.
Is Kybella as effective as chin liposuction?
Kybella is a non-surgical injectable that breaks down fat gradually over a series of treatments. There may be significant swelling after the procedure, and results develop slowly over time. Multiple sessions are usually needed, and the results are not as dramatic. Chin liposuction removes fat in a single session and offers more immediate and predictable results.
How does CoolSculpting compare to chin liposuction?
CoolSculpting works by freezing fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body over time. It is a non-surgical treatment with minimal downtime, and multiple sessions are typically recommended for best results. While it can be effective for reducing small areas of submental fat, results are often more subtle and can vary between patients. It’s also important to note that CoolSculpting carries a rare but notable risk of paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH)—a complication where, instead of shrinking, the treated fat cells enlarge and create a firm, raised area. This usually requires surgical correction. Chin liposuction offers more immediate, precise, and dramatic contouring in a single session.
