About Awake Liposuction

Awake liposuction is a minimally invasive body contouring procedure that removes stubborn, diet-resistant fat without the use of general anesthesia. Instead, Dr. Min uses a local anesthetic combined with light oral sedation. Tumescent fluid— a solution containing lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline—is injected to numb the area, minimize bleeding, and facilitate fat removal. (1) Once the area is fully anesthetized, small cannulas are used to gently remove fat. Dr. Min also offers ultrasound-assisted liposuction to help break up fibrous fat and enhance contouring, as well as Renuvion, an advanced skin-tightening technology that can further refine and enhance your results.

The Risks of General Anesthesia

While general anesthesia is commonly used for surgical procedures, it does carry potential risks and side effects, ranging from common to rare. Some of the more common side effects include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Drowsiness
  • Temporary confusion
  • Sore throat
  • Hoarseness
  • Chills or Shivers
  • Fatigue or Recurrent Sleepiness
  • Muscle Aches

More serious complications of general anesthesia include:

  • Pneumonia
  • Persistent Confusion
  • Memory Loss
  • Urination Problems
  • Blood Clots (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
  • Malignant Hyperthermia
  • Nerve Damage
  • Stroke, Heart Attack, or Death (2)

Benefits

Avoiding general anesthesia with awake liposuction offers several advantages, including:

  • Shorter Recovery Time: Most patients return to light activities more quickly compared to traditional liposuction, which often requires longer downtime.
  • Fewer Side Effects: Eliminates common side effects associated with general anesthesia, such as nausea, dizziness, and grogginess.
  • Improved Safety Profile: Avoiding general anesthesia can make your procedure safer by minimizing certain respiratory or cardiac risks.
  • Improved Patient Positioning: Being awake allows for easier repositioning during the procedure, which can enhance contouring precision.
  • More Open Communication: By remaining awake, you can converse with Dr. Min as she performs the procedure, making for a more interactive and collaborative experience.

Candidates

You may be a good candidate for awake liposuction if you are looking to sculpt your body without undergoing general anesthesia. It is an excellent option for patients who prefer to avoid anesthesia or who may not be ideal candidates for it due to medical reasons.

Candidates should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations. The best results are seen in areas with excess fat and minimal skin laxity. You should be at a maintainable, stable weight and be nonsmoking or willing to quit. Dr. Min will assess your candidacy during a personalized consultation.

Personal Consultation

A consultation is a key first step in your body contouring journey, as Dr. Min curates each treatment plan around your unique anatomy and lifestyle to ensure the most effective results. When she meets with you, she will explain what awake liposuction is, ask you about your medical history, listen to your personal concerns and goals, and perform a physical examination. Through this comprehensive consultation, she will be able to create a fully tailored plan to help you achieve your desired results.

Preparation

Once you have scheduled your procedure, you will need to make several preparations. To help, Dr. Min will give you a detailed set of instructions and may direct you to:

  • Refrain from Certain Medications: Stop using any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning or antiplatelet properties.
  • Prepare a Ride: Ask a trusted friend or family member to transport you home after your procedure, as you will not be able to drive yourself. Taking a ride share service such as Uber is not permitted for your safety.
  • Arrange Time Off: Prepare to step away from your responsibilities and commitments and allow yourself time to rest.
  • Pick Up Medications: Fill any prescriptions you may need for your recovery ahead of time.

Procedure

Dr. Min performs each awake liposuction procedure in her office procedure suite on an outpatient basis. The duration of your procedure will depend on the details of your treatment plan, but you can expect it to take somewhere between 2 and 4 hours.

When you arrive for your procedure, Dr. Min will review the details of your treatment plan before cleansing your skin and helping you get ready for surgery. Local anesthesia and a light sedative will be administered before she places a small incision in the treatment area and administers the tumescent fluid. Once the solution has had enough time to settle, Dr. Min will insert the liposuction cannula through the incision and suction out the targeted fat. The entire time, you will be awake and able to chat, all the while feeling relaxed and comfortable. After the procedure is completed, you will be placed in a compression garment and discharged home with detailed post-procedure instructions.

Renuvion

Dr. Min offers Renuvion® after the awake liposuction procedure for patients who would benefit from additional skin tightening. This is a minimally invasive skin-tightening treatment that combines radiofrequency (RF) energy with cold helium plasma to contract your skin while simultaneously stimulating the production of new collagen. This treatment can address mild to moderate loose skin that may be left after liposuction, ensuring your results look more toned and sculpted. Renuvion is performed immediately after the liposuction is completed through the same small incisions and does not lengthen your recovery.

Recovery

Recovering from awake liposuction is typically considered quicker and easier than from traditional liposuction. While you will still need to take some time to focus on healing, one big advantage is that you will not need to wait for the effects of general anesthesia to subside. You will feel like your normal self fairly quickly, while general anesthesia leaves patients feeling groggy and fatigued for much longer.

During your initial healing stage, it is normal to experience some swelling or bruising around the treated areas. These effects are temporary and will gradually improve with the help of compression garments and rest. Lymphatic drainage massage is also recommended to facilitate healing and optimize results.

Dr. Min will provide a full set of aftercare instructions so you understand how to properly care for yourself. By following her recommendations, you can return to your routine more quickly while also ensuring the best possible outcomes.

Results

Although mild swelling may temporarily obscure your final contours, you may notice an immediate improvement in your figure following your procedure. Once the swelling subsides, you will be able to enjoy the full results of your awake liposuction procedure. Renuvion offers immediate skin-tightening results that will continue to improve over time as collagen production increases.

The fat cells removed during liposuction are permanently eliminated. However, maintaining a stable weight is important to preserve your results, as remaining fat cells can still expand with weight gain.
